Why this exists

What does this emoji mean? Ask, don't scroll

Every emoji meaning on this page comes in two flavors: the dictionary definition and what people actually mean when they send it, which in 2026 are rarely the same thing. A 🙂 can be a threat. A 💀 means something was hilarious. A 💚 from a guy means something different than a 💚 from your mom. The AI box above reads emojis in context: tell it who sent what and where, and it reads between the lines. The table below covers the top 300 emojis the old-fashioned way: searchable, copyable, human-written.

Quick history, because it explains a lot: emoji were invented in 1999 by Shigetaka Kurita, who drew 176 tiny pictograms for a Japanese pager company. Today there are about 3,800 of them, approved one by one by the Unicode Consortium. And roughly none of them mean what the committee thought they would. That gap between official and actual meaning is exactly what this page is for. It runs on the same class of AI models we track every day in our AI pricing comparison.

Emoji meanings: the top 300, explained like a human

Each row gives you the real name, the meaning as it's used today (slang included), and the HTML code: paste 😭 into any website and you get 😭. Tap the copy button to grab the emoji itself. If what you're looking for isn't here, the AI above knows all ~3,800.

The big one

Heart emoji colors: what each one means from a guy or a girl

Here's the rule nobody writes down: the red heart ❤️ is a commitment, every other color is a hedge. When someone picks yellow, blue, or grey instead of red, that choice is doing emotional work, usually "I care about you, but let's not make it weird." Searches for heart colors "from a guy" have exploded this year, and for good reason: guys in particular use the off-red hearts to say things they'd rather not type out.

❤️

Red heart

Real love, no hedging. From a guy: he means it. Guys don't send red by accident.

🩷

Pink heart

Soft and sweet: crush energy or close-friend warmth. Gentler than red, newer than 💕.

🧡

Orange heart

The friend-zone heart. Warm but deliberately not romantic. From a guy: "you're great. as a friend."

💛

Yellow heart

Sunshine friendship. On Snapchat it's your #1 best friend, which is why teens guard it jealously.

💚

Green heart

From a guy: growth, nature, St. Patrick's, or quiet jealousy. Context decides which.

💙

Blue heart

Loyalty without pressure. The safest heart a guy can send: trust, bro-love, steady support.

💜

Purple heart

Admiration with mystery, and BTS ARMY's signature. Affectionate, not yet red-level.

🖤

Black heart

Dark humor, grief, or edgy affection. From a guy: "I like you but I'm not soft about it."

🤍

White heart

Pure and clean: sympathy, remembrance, minimalist love. The condolence heart.

🩶

Grey heart

Muted, reserved feelings: "I care, quietly." Trending hard from girls right now.

Two wildcards worth knowing: ❤️‍🔥 heart on fire is passion with the volume turned up: new-relationship intensity. And 💕 two hearts floats in the friendly-to-romantic gap, which is why girls send it constantly and guys overanalyze it constantly. Ask the AI above about any heart plus your situation. That's where the real answer lives.

Context decoder

What an emoji means from a guy

The most-searched emoji question on the internet isn't "what does this emoji mean", it's "what does this emoji mean from a guy." Fair, because guys famously under-text: when a man's whole reply is one emoji, that emoji is carrying the entire conversation. The general rule: guys use fewer emojis, so each one is a bigger signal. A guy who sends 🥹 is not being casual.

He sent 🥹 after your date

last night was really something 🥹 Genuinely moved. This one is almost never sarcastic from a guy: he's telling you it mattered.

He sent 😏 on Snapchat

oh really? 😏 Flirting, full stop. The smirk is the least ambiguous emoji a guy owns. He's testing the water.

He sent 🫠 to your selfie

🫠🫠🫠 You flustered him into a puddle. Melting face from a guy = charmed and slightly overwhelmed. Good sign.

He replied 👍 to your paragraph

👍 The thumbs-up to a long message is the coldest emoji in existence. Either he's busy, or this conversation is being closed.

The pattern holds across the board: 👀 means he's interested but playing it cool, 😅 means he's nervous, 💀 means you actually made him laugh. Paste his exact message into the decoder above with "from a guy" and it'll read the specific situation, not the generic one.

The mirror

What an emoji means from a girl

Girls text with a bigger emoji vocabulary, which changes the math: from a girl, the signal isn't which emoji, it's how many, and how warm. One 🩷 in a sea of plain texts means more than five 😂 in a row. The classic tells: 🫶 is warm appreciation (usually platonic, occasionally more), 🦋 is crush-coded ("you give me butterflies"), and 🥺 attached to a request is strategic cuteness that works because everyone lets it.

She sent 🫶 to your message

you're the best 🫶 Heart hands = genuine appreciation. Warm, sweet, and usually friendly, unless it comes with a 🦋, then maybe more.

She sent 😳 then deleted it

😳 Flustered and caught off guard: you said something that landed. The delete is the confession.

One more that confuses everyone: ❤️ from a girl to a guy spiked +350% in searches this year. The answer is annoyingly simple: girls send red hearts to friends more freely than guys do, so it's warm but not automatically romantic. The combo to watch for is ❤️ plus effort: long replies, fast replies, questions back. The heart is punctuation; the effort is the message.

Reverse search

Flirty emojis: which ones to send (and which to retire)

Sometimes the question runs the other way: not "what does this mean" but "what do I send?" The flirty starter pack in 2026: 😏 for confidence, 😉 for classic playfulness, 👀 for interest without commitment, 🥺 for soft asking, and 🫦 if you want zero ambiguity. The biting-lip emoji grew about 1000% in searches this year and there is no innocent reading of it. The 😘 kiss is warm but reads slightly parental now; 🥰 is the safer soft option.

Send: 😏 😉 👀 🥺 🫦 🥰 ✨: confident, current, readable.

Retire: 😘 alone (parental), 😜 (2014 energy), excessive 😂 (you're nervous-laughing in text form).

Fun committee fact: people keep asking the decoder for emojis that don't exist: a slingshot, a "talking behind your back" emoji. Every emoji has to survive years of Unicode Consortium review, so the language always lags the need. When there's no exact match, the AI above tells you straight and offers the nearest real thing. Type a vibe ("emojis for missing someone", "playful but not thirsty") and it builds the set.

The drift

Emoji slang in 2026: hidden meanings dictionaries don't list

Emoji meanings drift every year, and the official names never catch up. The skull is the canonical example: 💀 means "I'm dead", meaning something was so funny it killed you, and it has fully replaced 😂 for anyone under 25. Meanwhile the innocent-looking ones grew teeth: 🙂 is now passive-aggression in its purest form ("sure. fine. 🙂"), and ⏰ rode the slang phrase "clock it" (notice it, call it out) to a +300% search spike.

💀

What it looks like: death

"I'm DEAD": peak laughter. The new 😂.

🙂

What it looks like: a smile

Passive-aggressive "fine." Quietly furious.

🌽

What it looks like: corn

TikTok code for adult content: it rhymes. Not about dinner.

⏰

What it looks like: an alarm clock

"Clock it": noticed, called out, caught in 4K.

🧢

What it looks like: a cap

"Cap" = a lie. "No 🧢" = honestly, for real.

🍠

What it looks like: a sweet potato

The "yam": niche cousin of 🌽, same coded job.

😭

What it looks like: sobbing

Rarely sad. "This is too funny / too cute / too much."

👀

What it looks like: eyes

"I see what's happening": drama radar or flirty interest.

This is the layer where static dictionaries quietly die: by the time a meaning gets written down, the internet has moved on. The AI above gets refreshed context, so when the next 🌽 happens (and it will), ask it first. If you're decoding a whole Gen Z sentence ("no 🧢 that fit is 🔥💀"), paste the entire thing; it translates sequences, not just symbols.

Platform codes

Snapchat friend emojis explained: 💛 ❤️ 💕 😊 😎 🔥

Snapchat did something no other platform dared: it assigns emojis to your friendships automatically, whether you like it or not. Nobody reads the manual, so millions search "what does the yellow heart mean on Snapchat" every month. The short version: 💛 means you're each other's #1 best friend (most snaps both ways). Keep that up two weeks straight and it turns ❤️; two months and it becomes 💕. Yes, Snapchat formalized relationship milestones for friendship.

The full code: 💛 #1 best friends · ❤️ besties for 2 weeks · 💕 besties for 2 months · 😊 one of your best friends · 😎 you share a best friend · 🔥 snap streak (days in a row) · 💯 100-day streak · ⌛ streak about to expire: snap now or lose it.

The accidental genius: Snapchat created real social stakes out of thin air. People genuinely panic over a fading 🔥. The ⌛ hourglass is arguably the most stressful emoji ever shipped. If a friend emoji changed overnight and you want to know what happened to the friendship, ask the decoder above; it knows the mechanics.

Platform codes

TikTok emoji meanings: 🌹 🥀 and the secret codes

TikTok runs two emoji systems at once. First, the meaning-drift layer: 🌹 roses are the top gift creators receive during lives, so a rose in comments often means support, not romance, while 🥀 wilted rose became shorthand for heartbreak edits and yearning. And because TikTok moderates aggressively, its users built a whole evasion dialect: 🌽 for the censored word, 🍉 as a political stand-in, "unalive" instead of the real verb. Emoji as a workaround language.

Second, the literal secret codes: type [smile], [happy], [loveface], [wronged] or [cool] in a TikTok comment and they render as hidden TikTok-only emojis that don't exist anywhere else: small flat faces the platform never put on any keyboard. There are about 46 of them. They only work inside TikTok, which is exactly why comment sections full of them look like hieroglyphics from outside. Paste any confusing TikTok comment into the AI above; deciphering platform dialects is its favorite party trick.

A dynasty in decline

😂 vs 😭 vs 💀: the crying-laughing power shift

In 2015, Oxford Dictionaries made 😂 its Word of the Year, the first time a pictograph won. It was the most-used emoji on the planet for a decade, and by raw volume it still is. But culturally it fell: somewhere around 2021 Gen Z declared 😂 a boomer tell and switched to 💀 ("I'm dead") and 😭 (emotional overload of any kind). Today the generational fingerprint is real: heavy 😂 use says millennial-or-older, 💀😭 says under-30, and ironic over-use of 😂 says terminally online.

The subtleties worth knowing: 😭 almost never means sadness anymore: "loudly crying" got repurposed for "too funny / too cute / I can't handle this," which is why its searches keep climbing (+250% on "loudly crying emoji"). Actual sadness migrated to the quieter 😢 and 🥲, the smiling-through-tears face for bittersweet moments. And when something is funnier than 💀 can express, the escalation ladder goes 💀 → ☠️ → 😭✋ ("dead, deceased, stop"). Yes, this is a real grammar. No, nobody voted on it.

The famous two

🍆 and 🍑: how two innocent foods became unsendable

The eggplant and the peach are the most famous case of emoji meaning-capture in history. 🍆 entered Unicode in 2010 as, genuinely, a vegetable; within a few years its shape had made it the internet's default innuendo, to the point that Instagram for a while blocked searching the eggplant hashtag entirely. 🍑 followed the same arc. Analytics have long shown only a small minority of peach usage refers to actual fruit. Both are now effectively unsendable in their literal sense, which is a strange achievement for produce.

The practical guidance, kept classy: from a guy, either one in a flirty conversation means exactly what you suspect: it's suggestive, testing the temperature. In a cooking group chat, an eggplant is an eggplant; context does all the work, which is precisely what the AI decoder above is built to read. And if someone sends 🍆🍑 with zero romantic context established… that's not mystery, that's a forwardness check. You're allowed to leave them on read.

Emoji Meanings FAQ

What does ❤️ mean from a guy?

What does the green heart 💚 mean from a guy?

Three readings: nature/health vibes, St. Patrick’s season, or (the one people actually ask about) quiet jealousy, since green is the envy color. From a guy in a flirty chat it usually just means he liked the message but red felt too strong. Context decides.

What does the black heart 🖤 mean?
